Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning ─ Bishop

• Over-fitting: The fitted curve oscillates wildly and gives a very poor representation.

Methods of avoiding over-fitting:

• 1. Increase the size of the data set (to increase the complexity or flexibility of the model)
• 2. Maximum likelihood (by adopting Bayesian approach)
• 3. Regulization: Adding penalty to an error function.

\(E(\omega)=\dfrac{1}{2}\sum_{n=1}^{N}(y(X_n,\omega)-t_n)^2+\dfrac{\lambda}{2}||\omega||^2\), where \(\lambda\) denotes the regulization term.
